it has been a LONG while since i've been up with all this, what with a website and other developments. in fact, what brings me back (aside from a lack of exams) is the urge to post some awesome shit for whom it may reach:

so this brazilian duo dirtyloud has an array of remixes that i've stumbled upon, and i'd say it is certainly in your best interest to look into a couple more on youtube or whatever as they are consistently sweeeeeeeet.

Artist Spotlight: MSTRKRFT

For this Thursday's Artist Spotlight...I was having trouble deciding on an artist. Then I began thinking about electro/hip-hop collaborations... and all of a sudden MSTRKRFT just popped into my head.

Collaborating on and off since '98, Jesse F. Keeler and Alex Puodziukas (better known as AI-P) formed the MSTRKRFT (pronounced Master-craft) duo in 2005. The two have been close friends for a long time, and continue to flood the scene with a unique blend of electro dance music as both producers and DJs. They have remixed countless artists...from Kid Sister to Usher, and The Crystal Method all the way to Katy Perry (plus many more).

The range of their sounds is impressive...they come at you one minute with a funky old school groove...and the next they pack a powerful punch full of elec house energy. As I continue to listen to more of their music, I am pleased to report that these two EDM pioneers travel to the ends of the earth on a quest for sound differentiation. They definitely got more experimental after their first album and began to test the waters with other sounds and styles. The swag in their execution goes unmatched, but in terms of energy I'd place them somewhere amongst Crookers, The Bloody Beetroots, and Steve Aoki

Check out the music video from the single Easy Love from their first album The Looks. This is definitely a funky retro sounding jam. Quite an interesting video I might add...

Their work on Fist of God, their most recent album which dropped in March of last year, showed how perfect their sounds could be for lyrical intervention in the hip-hop and R&B arenas.

The most commercial song from the album was the Heartbreaker jam w/ John Legend, but the album also features hot tracks with E-40, Lil' Mo, and NORE. The Click Click song w/ E-40 utilizes hard rock guitar build ups and breakdowns counteracted by a crazy error type sound and hyphy house drums. Dig it.

During the build ups you can just picture a drummer tearing it up! It maintains rock feel as E-40 unleashes his flow on the instrumental.

Ain't No Love feat. Lil' Mo

Again...it has a raw, hardcore feel but Lil' Mo's vocals and the faster bpm keep things in an EDM perspective.

“It all comes down to feel,” states AL-P. “We’re interested in making people feel like they want to dance, at least a little bit, so it’s all about whatever it takes to get people there.”

This is the first installment of C.O. Way's new weekly post House Around the World, a podcast featuring house tracks selected and mixed by Bobsan every Friday. Tracks are picked either for their ethnic and multicultural samples and rhythms, or to showcase house producers from all corners of the globe. Much will be offered to the fans of Tribal sounds. The author will also include other tracks that he finds musically compelling.

The first episode of House Around the World is a special two-hour mix presenting some essential house tracks from all around the world, some classics, as well as a couple of fresh releases.

Make sure you play this on a good system with solid bass or a nice pair of headphones. No laptop speakers. And, no, the default earbuds that came with your iPod aren't good. I'm super serial!

To start it off, we've got a remix of Kosheen and Martin Eyerer's Your Move by the Athenian techno producer Mihalis Safras. In case you haven't heard of Kosheen, it's the Bristol-based trio that made the 2001 anthems Catch and Hide U. Sian Evans still manages to deliver on some sexy vocals. Very techy and deep groove featuring well-picked African percussion for a tribal sound.

Next up is The Chant by Bosnian Baggi Begovic who is now one of the big names in Holland. Saeed Younan, who recently made #1 on Beatport's top downloads with Yeah Ha, has a remix of it with loads of bass compared to the original. On another note, Baggi's version of Smells Like Teen Spirit is #3 on Beatport today; check it out. Adding some Latin spice is Pajaros Del Monte by Spain's Dario Nuñez and DJ Fist. And bringing in massive bass to the equation is Grumpli by Romanian producer Luca M. Listen for the realistic drum samples on this one. To chop up the rhythm a bit, we've got Chocolate Puma's remix of Umbungo by The Beatthiefs.

This week's track of the week is Novi Sad by Slovenia's musical mastermind Umek. The melody in the core of the track is a traditional example of a Balkan wind instrument tune. Listen closely for the occasional samples of dissonant phrases by female choirs, which are a common element in folk music of the region. Novi Sad is a Serbian city on the Danube and is home to the Exit festival, one of the largest open-air electronic music events in Europe.

The African by That Kid Chris and Princesa by Italian Francesco Rossi are solid examples of Tribal House. Check out the whistling melody in the former one. Representing the Indian subcontinent is Cultura Indiana by Denis Horvat (Denmark) and Mike Cortez (Poland). Brilliant Tech House with many Tribal elements. Munich-based minimalist Tobias Lützenkirchen brings us back to the Balkans with Kansas City Shuffle with its catchy sax sample. An essential track by him is 3 Tage Wach, which made it big in 2008. You can never get enough Balkan-sounding tunes, so next is Trombona by Polish Gregor Es.

Tim Bergling from Sweden, or Avicii, has made it big in the music industry. With Malo he has managed to turn a latin tune with Flamenco elements into a big room anthem. Likewise, Spanish-based Giuseppe Tuccillo brings back the Italian pop classic La Bambola by Patty Pravo on today's dancefloors with a banging house remix that has some soft Electro House elements. Going back to Tribal and Tech land, we've got Obia by Toronto-based Matteo DiMarr. This one features an actual African tribal chant in the breakdown, that results in a very suspenseful buildup.

In the theme of We No Speak Americano (to all you kids always requesting the 'americano song' or 'pa-paramericano' to your local club DJ, LEARN THE FUCKING SONG NAME), producers Will Gold and David Jones bring you Swing Time, a track based on an old-time swing song. In my opinion, this is a much better alternative to Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP's hit. Next up is Chris Montana's Tribal Mix of Tabarin Night by Czech producer Mekki Martin. Another wonderful Tech House track with lots of tribalism, perhaps named after the historic Parisian nightclub.

The next track is all around the world and many big names are involved in its creation. Philippines-born Laidback Luke, Brazilian-born producer Gregor Salto, and Mavis Acquah who was born to parents from Ghana and Indonesia; all Netherlands-based. And UK-based remixers Prok & Fitch... What you get is a Progressive House tune with some tech elements, some tribal percussion, and notably a big room anthem that rocked 2009.

A sound that the West has recently deemed annoying has made its way into a killer tech/progressive track by Roland P. The vuvuzela, a South African horn, is the symbol of South African soccer. Many TV reporters and viewers complained during the past World Cup from the loud noise the vuvuzelas made. Another big African entry is Ke Ke by F.Physical, a recent rework of Guinean musician Mory Kanté's Yeke Yeke.

Everybody loves Brazilian Girls. Especially producers Alex Sandrino (Netherlands) and Milton Channels (Colombia). If you don't, this high-energy tech track might change your mind.

In case you slept through 2006, or for some other reason missed Bob Sinclair's World Hold On, a producer by the name Pedro Henriques has a bootleg mashup of it with Bigger by Sweden's Sebjak. Very powerful. Next is Burujava by Stefano Noferini (Italy). This track is composed solely of percussion and bass... and a guy who says "hey." This is why I love Tech House.

Farewell by Bulgarian-born Stan Kolev concludes this week's episode. Slow progressive, and very chill; featuring Bulgarian folk vocals.

Mixtape Monday: Recovery

As we continue our recovery from one of the craziest weekends in Columbus history, Kingpin here to share some mixtapes worth listening too. I absolutely love being as diverse I can with these and this is no different. An electronic mic, a tropical mix, and a throwback disco mix are what I got on tap today.

The first mix is one found over at the Mad Decent blog, a short little tropical mix by a trio dubbed Sofrito. A real mix of some Latin flavor that will at the very least make you want to be somewhere warmer than Ohio.

The next one is a mix that Hardwell recently did for Armin Van Buren's Sirius Radio show. Plenty of electronic goodness on here, and ends amazingly with Dada Life's "Unleash the Fucking Dada." Incredible to think that Hardwell is only 22 and already taking the electronic world by storm.

Finally, a mix by one of my favorite DJs, DJ Apt One. Apt One is known for his modern twist on disco classics and this man always reps his hometown of Philly. Some of these tracks are fairly obscure disco to the point that I have to almost wonder if he recorded this on the original vinyl plates.

Thursday Artist Spotlight: Laidback Luke

The name of the artist for this week’s Artist Spotlight may be Laidback Luke…but his innovative approach to house music combined with his energy at live shows suggests quite the paradox (when it comes to music at least, I’m sure he is a very laid back guy when it comes to everything else).

This Phillipines born, Netherlands raised musician has worked with the likes of David Guetta, Diplo, A-Trak, Steve Aoki, and Lil Jon. He began his own label, Mixmash Records, which is home to other electro phenoms such as Steve Angello and A-Trak. He has remixed countless artists…everywhere from Christina Aguilera to Daft Punk, Black Eyed Peas to Moby. If the track he tweaks was a danceable song to begin with…wait til’ you hear it after this guy gets through with it. His website calls his genre a “superhuman fusion of hyperdrivehousestep&ghettojacktrancebass.

The “laidback” tag comes from the Snoop Dogg song Gin & Juice…”laaaiiiid backkk, with my mind on my money and my money on my mind…”

Quick and dirty banger post for y'all. I went around and asked some of the very talented artist and DJs that are playing this Friday (Summer in the Winter!) The first track I want to share with you is from the demon possesed Jawas that are taking over your brain at this very moment. Do you know who I'm talking about yet? ROEVY

I couldn't find a video on Youtube that didn't have this dude doing random 80s (Beastie Boys) hand gestures. Just deal with it, better yet close your eyes for 56 seconds.

Next up is from one of the COWay-ians, and a few others known as SceneWolf. They let me in on this fantastic track remixed by Night Drugs, not to be confused with the day drugs that we see people on (Broad and High).

The original is a kick ass track but Night Drugs really gave this banger an extra kick, much needed.

DJ Five50 enlightened me to Spencer&Hill - Dub Disco (Lucky Date Remix). Lucky Date is always on my watch list but this one stuck past me. Damn.

And now, for what I may or may not play. I am currently digging this new CRUX release 'Reborn' by F.o.o.l. It has so many amazing remixes of a spooky original track. The one remix that really stands out for me is by Redial, I have never heard of him/her/them but I like it!

He scatters just a few synth sounds at a time to create the perfect melody on this track, then spares you their presence while the build ups, break downs and bass drops take your senses over. The sheer simplicity in the almost trumpet sounding synths seems to convey such an epic message...but part of the fun lies in the fact that everyone can interpret it in their own way.

Check out his Hypem page for some more...the first one called Spaceship has a sort of Nas-Hero feel to it with the rapid synth sequence he uses at the beginning...then it gets dirrrrty after some vocals and a buildup leave you salivating. Listen to the contrast of styles in his music...Pass Me By is soooooo raunchy but We Go Deep is much lighter.

Kingpin back at you with the hot mixtapes to keep you moving through the work week.

Our first mixtape is one by TALK. TALK was the headline DJ at Sweatin' back in October, so be sure to check out this mega mix coming in at nearly an hour and half. Filled with a lot of funky noises and bass heavy music found in the new school house movement. Good for a nice chill head nod or a 90 minute booty bounce depending on your mood.

Be on the look out for Pro Bono, great DJ and I'll be teaming up with for a duo project called Scene Wolf at Summer in the Winter, that you'll not want to miss. Now on to the music and falling in love.

We already blogged about this mix before with our Hot Mess artist profile last week. But it really needs reposted again. It's another weekend in Columbus that we'd like to welcome you to from C.O. Way headquarters.

This weekend is a favorite at C.O. Way. The monthly kick off parties of Get Right and Dig! are in the wake.

Get Right will be making a move to Friday night aka TONIGHT for a change. This regular monthly event packs Skully's Music Diner on the regular with an all night dance party fueled by hip hop club bangers.

With the move to Friday, this allows people to not have to worry about jumping back and forth from Circus to Skully's on Saturday night. Get Right is DJ'd by Detox and Cashola and is free before 10pm and $3 cover after that. Let's see your friday night swag with some gin n juice in hand.

Saturday will feature the return of Gallery Hop and the Dark Lords of Hard Electro roeVy. Dig! the digital video and dance party that Roevy does with most of the of the other VJ/DJs in Columbus at Circus. This show marks the first for Roevy since the last Dig. Rumor has it they've been hard at work finishing up the new Demons EP as well as prepping for Dig and their set at Summer in the Winter next week. Check this out to get a preview for all the raging that will be going down at Fort Rapids next week. Dig! is free before 11pm and only $2 after ($4 if under 21).

And while we are on it. Today is Friday which means 1 week from Summer in the Winter. Please book your rooms ASAP to guarantee a spot. Columbus Creators: Hot Mess

When ones thoughts or appearance are in a state of disarray but they maintain an undeniable attractiveness or beauty.
A destructive duo of DJs/Producers based in Columbus, Ohio
Meet Hot Mess...

Compromised of Keith West and Corey Faulkner (aka Keith Swet and Vacate), these two have been spinning and producing some of the rowdiest party banging dub tunes heard East of the Mississippi.

About a year and a half ago, these two decided to start working together after knowing each other as up and coming DJs in the city for years. What initially started out as a project set on producing fidget house (seen primarily in their Messed Up EP here), the project quickly evolved into the wub filled genre. Coming from drum and bass backgrounds, Keith and Corey were some of the first DJs in the midwest to start spinning dubstep about 4 years ago. Corey says:

“A lot of the early dubstep was pretty dark and you would have to do these awkward drum and bass sets with a few dubstep songs. We would play for basically empty dance floors at shows down in Cincinnati. If anyone even came up and acknowledged what we were playing, it was exciting.”

The growth and popularity of the genre is one that Keith finds more than impressive at times. Keith says,

“If I had fallen into a coma 3 years ago when I was first playing dubstep, and woke up today. I probably would fall back into a coma out of shock on how massive it’s become.”

Individually, Keith and Corey have both been DJing for a combined 20 years. This also equates to about the average age of a person at an electronic music show these days. While neither of them are old by any means, they’ve been involved and around the Midwest EDM scene long enough to see it grow and change significantly.

When asked to describe their style, the words “party dubstep” kept coming up. Keith and Cory also mentioned how the name Hot Mess, in itself, is an embodiment of the type of music they want to make. Getting drunk and slamming to some dubstep usually turns a lot of us into a hot mess. There is just something about Keith and Cory's music that screams blackout. Honestly, I can't even begin to count the number of times that I've raged to Hot Mess tracks while immersed within the deep depths of borderline dangerous intoxication.

The Hot Mess boys quickly rose to prominence with the help of getting signed by booking agency Household Management earlier this year. Household does the bookings for a lot of the biggest names in the American dubstep scene including DZ, B. Rich, Zodiac Cartel, Trill Bass, Sharkslayer as well as booking for Blu Mar Ten and Magnetic Man. With their help, one of Hot Mess' biggest show took place in Miami during the Winter Music Conference this year called Beachbombing. There they played alongside some big names like the ones just mentioned. Oh yea, and House legend Armand Van fucking Helden was the headliner as well as Nadastrom, Dadalife, and Don Diablo. While you haven’t seen a whole lot of Hot Mess shows lately, it’s because the boys have been hard at work in the studio as of late. “About 6 months ago, I just wasn’t really happy with the production quality and it’s really all I’ve been working on improving lately,” says Keith. One look at the Hot Mess’ Soundcloud can certainly attest to this statement. In the past 2 months there has been some sort of new track or teaser posted on almost a weekly basis, the result of some hard work that Keith and Corey have been putting in.

So what’s next for Hot Mess? Well, quite a few things actually.

- An official release of their remix of Blu Mar Ten's "Believe Me" is available NOW on Beatport and iTunes.

- An EP coming out under the Brotown Records label should be available near by early 2011.

- A free EP soon called "Party Animal."

-A peak hour performance at Summer in the Winter.

-A new mix called "Take It To The Face" soon.

-A show in Indianapolis December 2nd.

-A major dubstep festival on New Years Eve in Wisconsin called NOISEMAKER featuring some of the biggest names in stateside dubstep including Zed's Dead, Udachi, and B.Rich.

In the end, the C.O. Way has to give major props to Hot Mess. It’s more than just a little DJ project that plays a few shows on the weekend. Attak hasn't released a mix in awhile. So this is definitely one to get excited about. This mix features pretty much exclusively hard bass hitting dubstep so it is very appropriately named Aggressor. If you've never gotten a chance to see Chad DJ (Attak), then you're really missing out. He delivers an intense energy filled performance that everyone gets into. Carma's mix on the other hand features the opposite side of the dub spectrum with some of the more chill vibes found in west coast purple dubstep and drumstep. Carma posted this up on Sunday saying that he recorded it first thing sunday morning. Seems only appropriate, chilling on a Sunday is the perfect time to listen to the purple dub. The last 2 mixtapes are ones that you wouldn't throw under the EDM category. But they are definitely worth a listen to.

For our Get Right / Hip Hop fans, we have a mixtape by a DJ out of Seattle, Washington called Tigerbeat. Plain and simple this is a mixtape of some quality hip hop club bangers. Sprinkle in some of Tigerbeat's unique blends and mashups and you got a solid mixtape of "All Rap Everything" like the name of the mix implies.

Finally, the last one is by a member of the legendary hip hop dj trifecta The Rub. Cosmo Baker is a Philadelphia legend when it comes to DJing. Just read some of the really incredible quotes that some of the biggest DJs have said about him in the bio section on his website, as well as some of the acts/DJs he's played with and you'll see what I mean by him being a big deal. Either way, Cosmo just threw together a rare find mixtape featuring all sorts of great R and B and Soul classics called Love Break Three - The Heart's Final Chapter. Definitely a good chill mix/ baby making mix. Get at it people. This really is a good mix if you appreciate music, and are looking for something refreshing and relaxing.

George Acosta @ Mansion | House comes back to Columbus

What used to be one of the prominent clubs in the Columbus EDM scene, the Red Zone, has reopened as Mansion and is quickly coming to life again. Lately it has hosted a couple of big shows, one of which was last night's.

The main stage featured an opening set by Dan Stark (Amsterdam | Tech House) and George Acosta (Miami | Progressive House and Trance), whom you hopefully already know, was headlining. The second room, formerly the Standard Lounge, had Rob Stern and That DJ Max.

Events like this show that the House scene in Columbus is definitely not dead. Even if the promoters didn't manage to fill the place, the crowd was big enough to maintain a pumping dancefloor throughout most of the night. Acosta absolutely delivered:

The video above was shot near the end of the night and includes some of the highlights of Acosta's set. The first track in the video is a mash-up of Wippenberg's Trance classic Chakalaka and Swedish House Mafia's One. The second is a remix of Young Folks by Peter, Björn & John which sounds very close to this one. For more George Acosta, tune in to his weekly show Lost World on Sirius channel 38, which airs on Saturdays at 3pm ET.

A large club with multiple rooms and high grade sound is easily going to provoke comparisons to BoMA, which for the last few years was the only "real" club here that hosted EDM events. While not as large overall, Mansion certainly has the bigger dancefloor, its sound installation is better in my opinion. On the other hand, it's important to note that Mansion's location is less than ideal and the interior doesn't seem to have changed much from the 90s. In times when the big clubs on the East and West coasts and around the world have cryogenic effects, large LED display walls, multi-colored lasers, and HD projectors, Mansion's rack of scan lights and strobes isn't exactly exciting. Neither is looking at low-resolution visuals coming from Winamp that are out of sync with the music. Nonetheless, it's up there with the best we've got in the city and more big events that will be hosted there are coming up, like Dave Dresden on December 11th

Hey everyone, it's our favorite time of the week. The WEEKEND!! We have a couple events C.O. Way thinks you should check out.

First up we got Juicy finally old enough to take it's first drink with the 21st edition Dirty Digital. DJs include founder Kevy Kev, DJ Carol and Failsafe. With the headliner being JJ Scrozzari's new DJ moniker Versus Vices. If you are into abrasive electro, then you do not want to miss this former Digiraatii stars set. JJ knows how to rock a major dance floor.

If you are feeling more downtown vibe, you can always check our friend Bobsan down at Mynt for Ibiza Fridays.

On Saturday, we have a favorite. Dance or Die is back to it usual time slot on the last Saturday of the month. Barticus and Self Help will be there to rock Kobo lounge with every sort of danceable tunes your mind can think of. This one will be interesting as the guests for the month is the local hip hop group that Self Help DJs for called Alleyes Path. A tag team group of swag rappers featuring Alleyes Manifest and Path. These guys have been tearing it up lately in the hip hop circuit. And adding them really does make Dance or Die a dance party for everyone.

And once again, if you are feeling more downtown. Definitely check out the George Acosta show at Mansion. Supporting DJs includes our buddy That DJ Max from Cincinasty as well as Rob Stern and Dan Stark.

And finally, end you weekends right with 1 more party on Sunday...yes, Sunday.

Thanksgiving Thursday Artist Spotlight: Tigran Mimosa

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm going to keep this relatively short and sweet for this weeks Artist Spotlight.

For those of you that are into Dubstep, Glitch Hop, grime and experimental hip hop...then you must absolutely check out Tigran Mimosa (real name Robert Collado) if you haven't already done so. His style exemplifies a visceral experience that transcends the boundries of any one genre. Tigran Mimosa describes his music as "Crunk-Step-Dub-Hop for the Soul." Pumping out innovative electro sounds for the past three years out of San Francisco, one can absolutely pinpoint the West Coast hip-hop influence embedded within a number of his tracks. This young producer undoubtedly was raised on a heavy dose of hip hop, but his roots in that realm were set ablaze when crossed with electronic sound waves. His tracks often paint a picture without the utilization of lyrics. The tracks speak to you through via bass...he uses a Bassnectar-type swagger in his wompWOMPs.

Mimosa has worked with the likes of Benga, Skream, Rusko, Datsik, Glitch Mob, Pretty Lights, Bassnectar and Flying Lotus. He has been all over the map in terms of festivals...including Coachella, Symbiosis Gathering, Burning Man and Decibel Festival. This producer/DJ has been on the rise for the past few years, and is most certainly one to keep an eye on.

Lets start this post in the best way possible, make it filthy. This first beast is full of crunch and punch, just the right amount to throw the crowds into a frenzy, sweaty fits of pleasure (damn that sounds dirty). Filthy Rehab released "Nesquick" (an amazing bassline track) about 2 weeks ago and its still bumping strong on the charts. There is also a Dubstep remix for you by Atomic Hooligan. Bass=Win

If you happen to be searching for a track to help you transition from Electro to Progressive, or vice versa, this is it. Alex Mind is an amazing producer that has only been around for a couple of years. He is quickly becoming a producer to watch and you should watch out for him too. This new track has got the right amount of sass and crunch spread out all over. Great female vocals help bring this song together, something the ladies can sing along to as they grind whatever is around them (maybe).

Breaks isn't something you hear to often in the Cbus club life, I guess the genre had its heyday in the 90s. I must admit other than a few artist like 'Far Too Loud', I don't really care for the genre either. I need the 4 to the floor! With that being said, this track is a must hear, must play, must dance my ass off to. Miles Dyson's remix made this song just pop, check the the drop at 3:15. BOOM!

Also, I guess he was a black man in his former life and just so happened to help invent Sky-Net. yep

A song that uses a Daft Punk guitar line as the build up can never be bad. What better way to confuse / pump people up for a on-slaughter of bass. UK native Calvertron has created many bass hungry tracks (mainly remixes) in the past and has built up a lot of steam. With this new EP out the club peeps can finally hear the true nature of Calvertron.

Mixtape Monday

It's Monday, so you know what that means another edition of mixtapes for ya.

I found a couple good ones I wanted to share with some nice variety.

The first one is from a man who originally was a Columbus-ite before taking his talents to the Chicago scene. Recently this guy has been blowing up the house scene worldwide with his tracks "Bromance" and "Papercat." This mixtape was a special one that Adulture did for the music blog Chemical Jump. Featuring a nice blend of poppy french house, Garrett Shrigly aka Adulture lays down some feel good music in this mixtape. A lot of the tracks used in this mix are done in the traditional 12 inch style. In other words, while the mix is 40 minutes long it only has 9 tracks total in it. Craziness.

Our second is for all of your harder electro heads out there. Jesse Jamz is a sort of protege to Designer Drugs and currently on the rise in popularity with a recent Asian tour he did. Jamz recently killed it with his remix of Far East Movement's "Like a G6" that came out not much more than a week ago. Like a lot of DJs he comes out with mixes every few months. His series called Ghost Mixes feature a lot of hot electro and dutch house bangers plus a bit of progressive house even. Check it out below.

For the local fix, we have the most recent mixtape by Dirty Current. The DC boys are some really notable up and comers in the Columbus scene. At 78 minutes, this mixtape packs a whole lot of tunage. I really loved this mixtape for how it seems to progressively build up throughout the entire mix. The last 30 minutes are definitely the best. I wouldn't normally tell anyone they need to sit down and listen to that long of a mixtape, but this definitely has Kingpin's stamp of approval. My absolute favorite part of this mix doesn't come in until the last 10 minutes. The transition between Zedd- The Anthem (Lucky Date Remix) and Mika- Kick Ass (The S Remix) is perfect and seem like the 2 songs were made to be put together. It has the sound like you would expect to hear during an extremely epic do or die scene in a movie.

Check that part out around 1:06-1:10 into the mix. Plus, I am not going to lie Conner and Marko sold me on this mixtape before I even listened to it with the little girl slugface artwork.

I recently took a trip to Detroit for Shazzzam with some buddies of mine, and got a chance to see some real heavy hitters. I was really excited to see Felix Da Housecat, since I knew he'd been in the game for over 100 years, but I really didn't know what to expect.

I thought maybe Chicago House flavor with some of that sweet sweet beep-boop, since we were in Technomecca.

Boy was I wrong.

Midway through his set, he dropped this little gem.

Not gonna lie. I peed a little. I worked up one hell of a sweat ravin' out, only to have my face burnt completely off by the magic of Carte Blanche.

YEEEAH!

I'ma be watchin' this guy real close. I feel like something big is in the works.

I wish that everyday of my life was a Pretty Lights show...

Everyday would be a lot more colorful... especially living in Ohio - its grey days like today that make me thankful for the astounding brain-melting talents of Derek V. Smith and his giant light cannons that absolutely blew away the bro's (there was a mad disproportionate number of dudes) at BoMA last Thursday... while I was there I bumped into DIGIRAATII and well they seemed to agree:

It's really gonna happen again.

Fort Rapids Indoor Waterpark is letting us back into their massive complex for another all-night adventure.

Needless to say, it was off the hook. This time we are doing it even bigger. There are a few notable changes which will be released in full on the Facebook Event Page as soon as it is finalized.

What I can tell you is that Summer in the Winter will feature a line-up complete with some of the most talented DJ's from Ohio and the rest of the Midwest. The hotel is booked exclusively for the party meaning that there will be stages located all throughout the hotel. DJ's in the waterpark, DJ's on the top floor, DJ's in the bar, and DJ's bumping on the 10,000 watt bass bin equipped sound system in the main ballroom. There will be many of the same features from the HHG as well as a number of new surprises.

Juicy 20! VS. Review

Circus regulars know every other Friday mean a round of Juicy is going down. This event founded by Melt Mag's CEO and long time Columbus DJ Kevy Kev had it's 20th round last night. This round of Juicy was special as the entire night featured 6 DJs (3 Duos)performing tag team DJ sets for the night.

The night started with WonderDoug (Kevy Kev's partner in crime for Juicy) and Kevy Kev tag teaming by switching off every 2 songs. The fearsome founders duo played for the first 90 minutes which featured some interesting gems of tracks between Wonder Doug's self described "WTF fagtronic" track selection and Kevy Kev's electrorock style. Apparently playing Smashing Pumpkins, Willow Smith, and Prodigy back to back is possible in a DJ set.

The 2nd duo on for the night was Raj and Bruni, 2 local and up and commers who tag teamed by just playing 2 shorter sets each. Raj stuck to hip hop/ and electro style remixes of hip hop which was a well-received change for the Juicy crowd. I know I enjoyed teaching everybody how Dougie. Next on tap was Bruni who switched things up with a mainly French house set, an EDM sub-genre that seems to not be played too much in Columbus. It was well received at well, at this time I found myself dancing with a cute little Asian girl who had dance moves for days, so that coupled with some one of my favorite artists Treasure Fingers was more than a treat.

Finally it was 1 am and the headliners were ready to take the stage. Dave Espionage and ShapeShifter aka Mr. Shifter. Both of these DJs have been in the game for a number of years, and it was obvious from the start of their set that they were an excellent choice to headline this special edition of Juicy. 2 very high energy performers, Shapeshifter always rocking rhythmically with the beat, and Espionage attempting to outdance and outsing everyone he is playing for on the dancefloor. These DJs also took the tag team style to heart and switched playing virtually every track. Varying in styles that were more urban sounding with a remix of U-God's "Ugodzilla" to poppier sounding tracks like the now world famous "Barbra Streisand" by Duck Sauce. Shapeshifter vs. Dave Espionage was a great treat to have performing together in Columbus.

Another Friday night in Columbus came to a close, and once again a group of Columbus EDM fans would sleep well after shaking their asses all night to bass thumping tunes.

Pretty Lights Shines @ BoMA For Sold Out Crowd

For those of you who missed the Pretty Lights show at BoMA this past Thursday, or don’t know about Derrick Vincent Smith and the Pretty Lights project, this post is designed to bring you up to speed. The sounds are created by super producer Derrick Vincent Smith, and he is accompanied by drummer Adam Deitch in his live performances. A sophisticated lighting system synchronizes with the sounds to create a hybrid musical experience complete with audio and visual stimulation.
It is difficult to articulate just how electrifying the PL live performance really is. The crowd reaction is astounding, as I looked around the main room in BoMA I noticed almost EVERY single hand in the crowd was up moving with the music.

Smith’s diversification in sound sample selection is without a doubt enough to make your average electro-head salivate. For a generation that was brought up on hip-hop, and also open to embracing the EDM culture, Pretty Lights delivers a versatile sound wave guaranteed to get people moving…and lights crazy enough to stop them in their tracks.

Pretty Lights has been labeled as a cross between down-tempo, electronica, and hip hop music. A couple of words come to mind…intensity, versatility, and energy just to name a few. One word to really sum up DVS is swagger, as the man certainly has this quality in copious amounts. Every move he makes to control the sounds for the evening is paralleled by an intense visual counterpart. As you will see from my video below (taken by my Droid), when the sounds are building up to an epic climax…he gradually cuts the lights so the room is almost dark, and then an explosion of bass and a multi-instrument medley joins the overdose of lighting brilliance.

The vibe at the show was perfect. Although BoMA was sold out and packed to the brim, the energy in the building seemed to embody the PLUR rave acronym of peace, love, unity and respect. Yeah, as the Digiraatii guys did point out via Twitter, there certainly was a bunch of "bro's" in the house that night, but that was no matter. What really counted was the fact that on his first trip to Columbus, Derek Vincent Smith was met by a cathedral packed full of Cap City representers, all vibing in unison with a beautiful fluidity. BoMA is an amazing venue and that was truly an amazing show...
I haven't talked to a single person that didn't have a good time.
I was fortunate enough to be standing backstage as the Pretty Lights encore was coming to a close with his signature tune "Hot Like Sauce." When DVS (who is a beast of a dude by the way, he has got to be damn close to 6'8'') lumbered off stage, the thrill of a sold-out performance still plastered across his wide-eyed face, he took a deep breath, raised his arms in triumph and said with a very boyish enthusiasm, "I DID IT." Yes he did.
After the show, when Derek descended down the basement steps of BoMA, the hip-hop style after party was underway. A large group of awe-struck starry eyed girls fought for DVS's attention as we all jammed out to a number of diverse tunes coming from his iPhone and portable speakers.

Before long, in true hip-hop after party style, DVS broke out a bottle of Goose and had a couple of his women start pouring drinks.

Not surprisingly, DVS had some good taste in music. "Psychedelic Stereo" by Mimosa made an appearance as well as the classic ho-bagging track from 50 Cents Get Rich or Die Trying, "Bitch Get in My Car."
When I started talking to Derek, he towered above me, staring down and seeming so far away, for a moment I thought that I was going to have to pay a long distance fee for my conversation.
Me: "Derek, are you in the States on December 10th? We are having a Waterpark party, pretty tempting right? You wanna play there?"
DVS: "Man, I get off tour for two days in December. I'm about to go home, play some XBOX and hit the bong!"
Me: "Right on."

DVS is a DJ that swags like a rock star. All eyes were fixed on his every move downstairs and he navigated his way through every ones constant begging for his attention as if he had done it before. He smiled and took pictures, burned back kush packed swishers, talked about how pleased he was with finally having the pleasure of visiting Columbus and continued to party it up with admirers while his crew hastily packed and loaded up his extravagant light and video rig.
Some familiar faces made an appearance downstairs including one of our favorite former Fort Rapids employees, Miss Molly. Check it out!

Thursday Artist Spotlight: Skrillex

Sonny Moore is a multi-talented dj/producer/performer who has been DJing a lot lately under the moniker, Skrillex. When I say multi-talented I'm not joking. He makes filthy dubstep tracks, but also amazing progressive house beats. He also makes electro house, electronic music... and yes, he used to be the lead singer of every high school kids favorite screamo band, From First to Last. This is not my kinda music, and I think most people I know would probably agree, but his production work is just too good to even care about that. His first EP called 'Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites' was recently released and has gotten a lot of love so far. I think the first track I heard off of it was Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites which I had found on one of the hundreds of music blogs I browse, and I instantly wanted to hear more. So here are some of my favorites:

REMIXES:
This was the first Skrillex that I heard. It's his best remix in my opinion. The glitchy vocals are so fricken catchy, I love it. I can't listen to any of the other remixes of this song anymore:

Russ Chimes' Midnight Club EP is stunning. Some amazing french disco style house with driving beats and pumping bass lines.... I am in love. Maybe it's just me, but I am a big on disco style house beats and Russ Chimes is really doin it in for me right now (along with Miami Horror's new album). So checkout the video below, it's really really cool. He originally released 3 separate videos, each with a different track, kinda of giving us a teaser for the EP (but really it was much more than a teaser). The video below has all 3 parts combined in one, and it's vimeo so it's HD of course. The videos were directed by Saman Keshavarz (known for his SXSW Award-Winning video for 'Luv Deluxe' by Cinnamon Chasers). I hope you all enjoy the sounds as much as I am. Later Columbus.

Beatport Bangers Vol. 1

While I was looking at new Electro tracks on Beatport I noticed something strange. Skrillex has snatched up most of the entire top 10 of Beatport's Electro chart. I don't really care for most of his tracks but one that did pop out and rage my ears was "Rock N' Roll (Will Take You To The Mountain)". This track is huge, one you would expect in a 3am Roevy or Digiraatii set.

This track is frantic, sexy and rough. Some how it just fits together.

Next up is a Robbie Rivera remix of "And Do You Feel Scared" originally by the artist Electro Hippy, which I have no clue who that is, some say it is a Robbie Rivera moniker. This is the next floor filler for Axis parties, or at least it should be.

Now at first most of you will think of blurry memories of tequila flavored Ladies 80's and there is a reason for that. This is heavily sampling a Howard Jones hit from the 80's. Weird thing is, both the original 80's track and the remix are really good. Obviously one track is for raging youngsters and the other is for raging youngsters, wait... damn you Thursdays. Anyways.

Electro Hippy - And Do You Feel Scared (Robbie Rivera Remix) @ Beatport

Most of you Electro heads are probably aware of Gtronic. Known for his crunchy wobbles and attention grabbing leads, he is no stranger to being on the tops of the charts. His new release "Sucker Punch" was a huge tune that bridge many genres: Electro, Metal, Industrial, Dubstep, Hardstyle, Awesome. With every great EDM track comes a plethora of remixes. One that stands out, keeps to the original but adds more to it (with every great remix does) is by Audionite, a newcomer hailing from Berlin.

The customizing of The Potato Heads can be fun, creating mutants, transsexuals and battle victims. One thing I have found lately is that their music is much better. I have never heard an original by the spud heads before, just solid remixes. Now you and I get to experience their full potential. There really can't be too much doubt on the talent of The Potato Heads because this project consist of Tom EQ and Jeff Doubleu. This track booms and gets you pumped just like 90% of the songs released from Jack Union.

Voodoo Chilli, chunky, spicy, yummy, dirty and goes down so easy. I have no clue how this track got past me. It reminds me of hot summer night at Sweatin' 2 years ago, with the dive bar's ceiling dripping in perspiration (nostalgia). Not much to explain here other than Urchins made an awesome remix for the fall nights. It may be cold outside but the club is steaming.
